With facilities as extensive and complex as we have at CVAC, it
takes someone with wide-ranging skills and plenty of practical experience
to handle the maintenance. Meet Fred Portman!
Fred has been
with the Club since 1976. Before that he had his own painting and
construction company based in Newbury, Ohio, his hometown.
He has watched
the Club expand over the years.and his responsibilities with it.
Today, he has a staff of five to help him, plus specialist crews
to deal with specific jobs.
As the calendar
moves from summer to winter and back again, Fred has added maintenance
duties: "We always have to anticipate the change in seasons.
For instance, it takes eight to ten hours to scrub the floor of
the nine indoor tennis courts and then five days to clean all the
ceiling lights. That all has to be done before the members are ready
to move indoors for the winter."
Fred and his
wife live about seven miles from the Club in Welshfield. They have
three children and are now proud grandparents. On his vacations
he likes to golf or head to the mountains to trout fish ".while
my wife shops. It would be cheaper if she liked to trout fish!"
he says with a smile.
Fred's responsibilities
include oversight of all the club's mechanical and structural operations.
